Most people ask me why I do what I do and I simply answer " because I love what I do" and " I work 80 hours for myself to avoid working 40 hours for someone else" this doesn't suit all people but it suits me. I can start work at whatever time I want, finish when I want and ultimately wear what I want without worrying about having 5 shirts washed and ironed for Monday morning. Having a husband who also runs his own business means I don't have to do his either! Bliss!
In order to really love what you do takes a bit of time and as most of us are out there making other people's companies grow, we don't really get the time to sit down and define this. If we are lucky then we may get a chance to tell our bosses what we think we love, but that soon gets lost in translation and ends up being a nice to have conversation and not a must have conversation.
I know I am very lucky to do what I do and work with such great companies, colleagues and candidates and there isn't a day that goes by when I don't thank the universe for letting me have the choice. It took a lot of sleepless nights to make the step but I haven't looked back since.
One of my bosses used to say to me "Emma, if I got the chance to do exactly what I loved then I wouldn't be working here, I'd be on the golf course and that my dear doesn't pay the mortgage" but sitting here not doing what you love will soon stop you having the ability to pay the mortgage! was my answer!! another career limiting statement but he got my point.
It is vital that when I start talking to candidates or clients about hiring opportunities that I understand the passion for the role from both sides. If I can't get excited about the role, then how can the person I am talking to get excited about the role. I love it when people's eyes start to light up when they talk about what they do and how they enjoy doing it. Hearing of great successes is one of the joys of my job but also listening to those who have dealt with difficult times with such passion and conviction is equally rewarding.
if you are stuck in a role right now and can't find any love in doing what you are doing then please pick up the phone and give me a call as I always willing to listen. I have been there after all and know how hard it can be to be true to oneself especially when the mortgage needs paying.
